these standards, may be used if demonstrated to be satisfactory and approved by the cognizant
engineering activity. Cadmium plating must be avoided when satisfactory alternative processes can
be used.
3.5 Design and construction.
3.5.1 General design. The design of automatic quantity-measuring hydraulic fuses shall
conform to the applicable specification sheet and offer the minimum restriction to flow in the open
position, smallest size, and minimum weight consistent with other requirements of this specification.
3.5.2 Shape and dimensions. Type I hydraulic fuses shall conform to AN6281. Type II
hydraulic fuses shall conform to AN6282.
3.5.3 Tube connections. All tube connections for fuses shall be internal type, straight-
threaded, and conform to SAE AS5202.
3.6 Performance.
3.6.1 Rate of flow. The rated flow for each size fuse shall be in accordance with the
requirements of SAE AS5440 for the line size specified.
3.6.2 Temperature range. Hydraulic fuses shall be designed to operate over a
temperature range from -65 °F to 160 °F (-54 °C to 71 °C).
3.7 Magnetic particle inspection. All magnetizable highly-stressed parts shall be subjected
to magnetic inspection in accordance with ASTM E 1444. Where necessary, such inspection shall
be called for on the manufacturer's drawings. Cracks or other injurious defects disclosed by
magnetic inspection shall be cause for rejection.
3.8 Operational marking. All fuses shall be clearly marked with arrows noting direction
of flow for closing.
3.9 Age controls. Age-sensitive elastomeric parts shall be in accordance with
SAE AS1933 and SAE ARP 5316.
3.10 Recycled, recovered, or environmentally preferable materials. Recycled, recovered,
or environmentally preferable materials should be used to the maximum extent possible provided
that the material meets or exceeds the operational and maintenance requirements and promotes
economically advantageous life cycle costs.
4. VERIFICATION
4.1 Classification of inspections. The inspection requirements specified herein are
classified as follows:
a. Qualification inspection (see 4.3).
b. Conformance inspection (see 4.4).
